Step 1: Risk Factors


There are several factors that can increase your risk of chronic disease. Some you can change; some you can't.
1. Major risk factors that can NOT be changed include:
a. Those characteristics you are born with: age, sex, race & ethnicity; and,
b. Your family history of chronic disease: cancer, diabetes, heart disease or stroke, etc.

2. Major risk factors that CAN be changed by making dietary and lifestyle changes and/or taking medication include:
a. Clinical factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and overweight or obesity;
b. Lifestyle factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and alcohol use.
